process-based works in physical & high-resolution digital forms.

greyfade is a music label and publisher that takes as its basic premise the idea of a music release as a complete conceptual universe, integrating sound, compositional architecture, visual design, and text into a single object worthy of sustained engagement.

founded in 2019 by joseph branciforte, the label’s roster includes artists working at the intersections of procedural composition, acoustic & electronic minimalism, alternative tuning systems, and digitally mediated forms of improvisation.

in 2024, greyfade introduced a new music release format called FOLIO—a 6.5 x 8” linen hardcover book with included digital music download—that seeks to answer the question: why release music in physical form today? equal parts album release, critical text, making-of narrative, study score, and collectible art object, the FOLIO format represents a renewal of greyfade’s commitment to the continued relevance of both thoughtfully designed physical objects and high-resolution digital music, bringing greater context and depth to the label’s most ambitious musical projects.

greyfade releases are not available on streaming services.
[why?]  they are made possible by listeners like yourself supporting the music directly.

greyfade shop: digital formats

digital downloads are available via the greyfade shop in the following formats:

high-resolution / 96kHz, 24-bit AIFF
CD-resolution / 44.1kHz, 16-bit AIFF

high-resolution digital files provide a listening experience closest to what the artist intends and hears during the creation process. these files contain about three times as much sonic information as a CD, thus the file sizes are somewhat larger than the average download. we believe that this is a small trade-off to enjoy the listening experience exactly as it was intended, with maximum fidelity.

CD-resolution digital files are uncompressed CD-quality files at 44.1kHz, 16-bit. if the album is released as a CD edition, these files will be sonically identical to the CD. this option is a good trade-off between quality, compatibility, and file size.

MP3 is a compressed format, which means that a significant quantity of sonic information is removed from the file in order to decrease its size. we, therefore, do not recommend this option unless you are particularly concerned about file size.
